The festival rotates among four sacred locations every three years, with the Maha Kumbh occurring at Prayagraj every 12 years.

The Sacred Mythology
The divine origin of Kumbh Mela
According to ancient Hindu mythology described in the Puranas, the Kumbh Mela originated from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). This monumental event involved gods and demons working together to extract the nectar of immortality from the primordial ocean.
Churning of Ocean
Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrita (nectar of immortality).
Appearance of Kumbh
The pot (Kumbh) containing Amrita emerged. A battle ensued between gods and demons over its possession.
Celestial Chase
For 12 divine days (12 human years), gods carried the Kumbh across the heavens, pursued by demons.
Four Drops
During the chase, four drops of Amrita fell to earth at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
These four sacred locations where the drops fell became the sites of Kumbh Mela. The waters at these places are believed to retain the divine nectar's purifying power, especially during specific astronomical alignments.

The Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) is the most spectacular event of Kumbh Mela. Juna Akhada, as the largest and oldest akhada, holds the supreme honor of leading the procession of Naga Sadhus to the sacred waters. This privilege has been maintained for centuries and represents the spiritual authority of our lineage.
The sight of thousands of ash-covered Naga Sadhus, completely renunciate monks who have given up all worldly possessions, riding elephants and horses, carrying trishuls (tridents) and swords, while chanting "Har Har Mahadev" is an unforgettable spiritual spectacle that draws millions of devotees.
